Annual Local Convention

As many of you know, each year at our chapter’s Annual Convention, New Orleans DSA members from throughout the metro region come together to review the progress we’ve made as a chapter so far, elect new leadership to the Local Council, and discuss and debate political priorities that will shape the organizing work we do throughout the year to come. This year, due to the pandemic, we are holding a split convention via Zoom, a live video conferencing app.

Part I of the convention was held at the end of July and covered three of the five core elements of our traditional convention: State of the Local Address, Treasury Report, and Local Council Elections. (To learn more about Convention Part I, click here. You can also read about the newly elected officers and their vision for the next year of the chapter here.)

Part II of the convention will be held on Saturday, July 25 at 2:00 PM and will cover the two remaining (and arguably more exciting) elements: Political Resolutions and Bylaw Amendments.

During Convention Part II, general members will have a chance to introduce, debate, amend, and vote on:

  • Political Resolutions to help us determine our organizing goals and priorities, shape our organizational culture and institutional practices, and provide strategic direction for the year ahead;
  • Bylaw Amendments to help ensure our organizational structure and decision-making processes are set up to facilitate transparency, accountability, and bottom-up democratic planning.

Our chapter’s Annual Convention is not only the largest annual gathering of socialists in the state, it’s the greatest opportunity we all have, as members, to exercise democratic control over the organization to which we belong and to shape the organizing work we’re doing long-term.

We have a better world to build – but first, we have to get organized.
